Wisdom Beyond Borders Comes to Campus

Manit Sriwanichpoom paid a recent visit to New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia on October 7th, 2011 to share more on his works.

One of Thailand’s leading photographers, Manit is also well known in the international art world. His solo shows include Lambs of God at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (Melbourne, Australia); Bangkok in Pink at the Yokohama Museum of Art (Japan); Pink Man in Paradise at Monash University (Australia) and Valentine Willie Fine Art (Malaysia); and Beijing Pink at the Highland Gallery (Beijing, China). His works are held by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), The Queensland Art Gallery (Australia), and the Singapore Art Museum and by many private collectors. In 2002, Phaidon Press named him one of the world’s 100 most interesting emerging photographers in their book, BLINK. In 2007, Manit was awarded Japan’s Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Prize.

Furthermore, an art exhibition with a great deal of vitality and spice was up for public viewing at Tisch School of the Arts Asia. Titled Thai Folk Wisdom, the exhibition brings to life 50 proverbs and sayings from Thailand with great creative flair. Each proverb is interpreted with an abundance of vibrant pizzazz reflecting modern Thai culture.

Under the direction of Tulaya Pornpiriyakulchai, sensational visuals have been provided by some of Thailand’s leading contemporary artists from Jakkai Siributr, Jitsing Somboon, Manit Sriwanichpoom, ML. Chiratorn Chirapravati to Pinaree Sanpitak. S.E.A. Write award winner, Jane Vejjajiva’s commentaries on the proverbs is accompanied by the delightful tale of a girl, Lum Nam, and her aunt and uncle. Her trials and tribulations in Bangkok links ancient Thai Folk Wisdom with the vibrant and modern city.
