David K. Irving Returns For Lecture

David K. Irving, associate professor at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, recently returned to Tisch School of the Arts Asia to lecture. Irving is the former chair of the school’s film program in Singapore and New York.

When he arrived November 9, 2011, faculty, staff and students attended a tea session held at the campus. It was a natural get-together to catch up and mingle. The next day, Irving led a session on ‘The Faculty Development’ from his new book, Elements of College Teaching, with Tisch School of the Arts Asia faculty members.

Elements of College Teaching draws upon Irving’s own experience in film, and the transition he made to the classroom. In the book, Irving highlights techniques that serve both professions and translates them for teachers. “Instructors need training to teach college courses. Equally important, they should be informed about the workings of the academic department in which they will teach,” Irving said.
