The Joy of Solitude, a short play by Dean Lundquist ’12 (MFA, Kanbar, Dramatic Writing), garnered multiple awards at the fourth annual Short+Sweet Malaysia Festival held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre on October 31, 2011. The play, a theatrical adaptation of Un Estilo de Vida (A Lifestyle) by Argentine author Fernando Sorrentino, was presented in Hokkien with English supertitles. The play, which has been performed through Southeast Asia and Australia, is about a man who inadvertently locks himself in his apartment, makes several failed attempts to escape and eventually decides he prefers his solitude to dealing with the outside world.
This was Dean’s second play to be presented in the festival. In the inaugural Short+Sweet Malaysia, his play I Can Tell Your Handbag is Fake netted multiple awards, including best script and the Peoples’ Choice award for best play.
Also in October, another short play by Dean, Coulrophobia (The Fear of Clowns), debuted as part of the Ninth Annual North Park Playwrights Festival held in San Diego, California.
