A new project from Liu Yang ’11 (MFA, Kanbar, ANDA) created a buzz on the popular chinese website, tianya.cn last week, and it’s development will be the subject of an upcoming documentary. Yang has worked with the Earth Observatory of Singapore and Tisch Asia to donate paints, canned goods and sporting equipment to children in the Weixin county of Yunnan, China. As part of the project, she will hold art and animation workshops focusing on Earth awareness conducted through video-conferencing with faculty and students of the animation and digital arts program at Tisch Asia. Students will also have the chance to learn about the earth with Yang through computer games developed by the Earth Observatory. ”The Xinongkong Primary School has around 100 kids. Most of them come from poor families and have not had the opportunity to use color paint in their lives. My plan is to bring painting materials to each kid in the school, and ask them to draw and paint images of the Earth, humankind and nature,” Yang tells us. Some of the project’s partners have agreed to buy the student paintings created during the workshop to help fund the project.
