Dramatic Writing Program at Short+Sweet Festival in Singapore

Tisch Asia’s Dramatic Writing Program, in only its second year, was a force in The Singapore Short+Sweet Festival.  Of the 40 plays presented, eight were written by faculty and students in Dramatic Writing Program — Joshua Billig, David Chang, Wendy Hammond (faculty),  Drayton Hiers, Jill Karkosak, Dean Lundquist, William Kovacsik (faculty), Li Linn Wee.   Ms. Hammond also directed the play by Ms. Wee, a wonderful collaboration of faculty and student.  William Kovacsik and Dean Lundquist were finalist for the Judge’s Picks awards, and Josh Billig was a finalist for The People’s Choice Awards. Short+Sweet Theatre is the biggest festival of ten minute theater in the world, held annually in ten different theaters in Australia and Southeast Asia.  Watch out next year!

On July 8, 2010, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy® Awards. The Awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of primetime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from in any primetime period (6:00 PM – 2:00 AM) during the 2009 calendar year. With representation from its Dean’s Council, faculty and alumni community, the Tisch School of the Arts family racked up 50 nominees! Break a leg!

The Primetime Emmy® Awards will be broadcast on August 29, 2010 on NBC.

Tisch Alumni Take Home Daytime Emmy® Statuettes

In ceremonies over the weekend, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences celebrated the winners of the 37th annual Daytime Emmy® Awards. The Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards are divided into the Telecast Awards and Creative Arts Awards; they recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production and are presented to individuals and programs broadcast from 2:00 AM-6:00 PM during the 2009 calendar year.

This year eleven members—including nine alumni—of the Tisch School community received statuettes for their achievements.

Tisch alumni continued their winning streak during the 2010 awards season. Oscars and Independent Spirit Awards were bestowed upon Tisch alumni in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television for their cinematic achievements.

Tisch School of the Arts’ alumnus Geoffrey Fletcher ’99 (MFA, Kanbar, Film) scored an Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, as well as  an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay for the same film.

Fletcher was joined by fellow Kanbar Institute alumni Juan Jose Campanella ’78 (MFA, Kanbar, Film), who received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, El secreto de sus ojos; and at the Independent Spirit Awards, Joel Coen ’78 (BFA, Kanbar, F&TV) took home the Robert Altman Award for A Serious Man.

Next Reel 2010

Some exciting announcements about the 2010 edition of the Next Reel International Film Festival coming up in Singapore, 31 January – 5 February.

We are pleased to announce that Oliver Stone, the Academy Award winning filmmaker, will be the guest of honor at the opening night of the Next Reel International Film Festival 2010. A special screening of one of his films will be held 31 January 2010 followed by a Q&A with the director. More details on this event will be released soon.
